CHEM 110 Studies in Chemistry II

CHEM 110 Studies in Chemistry II 4 hours credit – A continuation of the study of the principles of chemistry and their applications. The topics include solution properties, acids and bases, ionic equations, oxidation-reduction, equilibrium, kinetics, descriptive chemistry of the elements, nuclear chemistry and an introduction to organic chemistry.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • To acquaint the non-science student with the principles of chemistry so that the student can appreciate the scientific method and the workings of chemistry as a science
  • To provide the student with a scientific literacy which can enable the nonscientist to make reasoned judgments on those societal issues which are grounded in chemistry.
  • The student will develop an understanding of the steps required to solve complex quantitative problems involving chemical formulas and equations.
  • The student will develop an understanding of the structure of solids and intermolecular forces.
  • The student will investigate and understand that the phases of matter are explained by kinetic theory and forces of attraction between particles.
  • The student will investigate and understand that quantities in a chemical reaction are based on molar relationships.
  • The student will investigate and understand that the phases of matter are explained by kinetic theory and forces of attraction between particles.
  • The student will investigate and understand how basic chemical principles relate to many areas of chemistry.
