EDUC 610 Methods in Educational Research

EDUC 610 Methods in Educational Research  3 hours credit – The course exposes students to various primary education research methods and the use of scientific paradigms.  The course introduces several themes and topics that include research strategies and designs, the nature of quantitative/qualitative research, quantitative/qualitative data collection and analysis. Conducting literature reviews, critiquing research, and designing a research proposal will be emphasized.

Grading status: Letter grade.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completing the course, participants will be able

  • Distinguish between qualitative and quantitative paradigms of research.
  • Locate, understand, evaluate, and interpret qualitative as well as quantitative
  • Read and evaluate qualitative and quantitative studies, their methodologies, and findings.
  • Describe several research methods, including appropriate research questions, the steps to researching with the method, what can (and cannot) be inferred from the findings
  • Identify the role of theory in research.
  • Articulate researchable issues in education.
  • Systematically distill, analyze, and synthesize extant literature to frame research endeavors and identify valuable opportunities for further investigation.
  • Critically examine the theoretical frameworks and research methods used by others
  • Synthesize literature to answer a research question
  • Describe qualitative and quantitative data gathering and processing
  • Describe qualitative and quantitative data processing tools
  • Define, position, and justify a research problem of relevance to your field of interest
  • Successfully locate published research related to a given topic.
