Minor At A Glance
The Criminal Justice minor is meant to provide a basic grounding in the criminal justice discipline for students majoring in other fields. This minor offers a thorough exploration of the criminal justice system, including policing, corrections, and prosecution. In addition, you can choose to take courses in criminal systems administration, border security, ethics, or juvenile justice.
Learner Outcomes
Upon completion of the Minor in Criminology, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the relationships between the components of the criminal justice system.
- Identify and challenge popular misconceptions about crime and understand how and why they are perpetuated.
- Identify the constitutional provisions that govern the treatment of persons suspected of committing a crime.
- Identify the core components of the American criminal justice system: police, corrections, and courts.
- Know how to acquire and evaluate data associated with crime and justice issues, and acquire the skills needed to assess the validity and reliability of such data.
- Understand how criminological theories are applied in everyday social life, especially in law and social policy.
- Understand how social inequality, including class, race, and gender inequalities, relate to crime and criminality.
Program of Study
The minor in Criminal Justice requires a minimum of eighteen (18) semester hours in Economics, of which nine semester hours must be advanced upper-level courses (numbered 300 or above) and of which nine semester hours must be taken at Leighton.
