Our History
Established on July 7, 2020, as a 501(c)(3) corporation [EIN: 85-1816923], the Leighton University Corporation was founded under the laws of the State of Mississippi as an entity functions include receiving, holding, investing, and disbursing funds for the purpose of providing support to the University and scholarships to students.
The Leighton University Corporation is a non-governmental entity is established as a nonprofit corporation with the principal purpose of establishing an institution (Leighton University) to serve individuals for scientific, educational, cultural, and other charitable purposes. Leighton Corporation is governed by a board of directors (that is non-paid and not on a salary), who are responsible for ensuring their solicitation of funds aligns with the mission and vision of the Corporation in support of Leighton University and its students.
As a nonprofit institution, Leighton University operates independently of ownership structures. Its position, therefore, allows it to focus on providing the service of quality education to students, improving students' experiences, increasing student success, among qualities, rather than generating financial gains.
Our Mission
To provide educational opportunities through scholarships and other support services to students who might otherwise be unable to matriculate through post-secondary degree-awarding institutions.
Our Commitments
The Leighton University Corporation's Board of Directors have a genuine interest in the Institution and are, individually, willing to assist in fulfilling the purposes and objectives of Leighton University Corporation. The direct management of the Foundation is maintained by its Board of Directors, composed of educators, business and professional leaders from the community, and includes a non-voting representative member of the University Board of Trustees. The direct overall management, oversight, and sustainability of the University, however, is by the Board of Trustees, which has the fiduciary responsibility of the Institution. The chancellor of the University may serve as a non-voting member of the Board of Directors; similar to his/her role at the Board of Trustees.
The Leighton University Corporation, through its Board of Directors, may choose and prioritize from a broad range of opportunities to accomplish organizational goals. Similar to the University's Board of Trustees, the role of the Board of Directors is to provide oversight to an organization, ensuring it’s fulfilling its mission and moving closer to its vision and goals. In addition, like trustees, the Leighton University's Board Directors have fiduciary duties, which include the duty of care, the duty of loyalty, and the duty of obedience. Essentially, this means Board members must always act in the best interest of the organization, and never for personal gain.
