CORE Program Courses

Students who matriculate as first-year students (but not transfer students) are expected to complete all or most of their graduation requirements by taking Leighton courses.

Transfer students are expected to work closely with their advisors at the earliest opportunity after admission to determine which courses, if any, may be accepted at the time of transfer to meet CORE Program requirements and its goals. Only courses that clearly meet the CORE Program’s goals as specified will be approved as meeting Leighton’s CORE Program requirements.

Substitutions for CORE courses from other colleges and institutions: Students who wish to fulfill a CORE Program requirement by taking a non-Leighton courses (for example, a summer course at another institution, or a course through another institution’s program), must seek approval and authorization in advance through the Registrar. Petitions for such substitutions are available from the Registrar’s Office. The petition must be signed by the student’s Academic Navigator in the Student Academic Success Center.

General Education Course Requirements

Program requirements broaden students’ perspectives while preparing them to become well-rounded professionals. To that end, the Leighton general education program requires 41 (bachelors programs) or 34 (associates programs) credits in foundational courses targeting expectations for the Institutional Student Learning Competencies (ISLC) in Purposive Communications; Quantitative Skills; Behavioral and Social Understanding, Scientific Reasoning, Humanities and Fine Arts and Technology Literacy.  All undergraduate programs require certain specific courses in the CORE also as a program requirement.
