LIBR 150 – Library Research

LIBR 150 Library Research 1 credit hours. Library Research is a course provides a basic understanding of concepts in the research process, enabling students to identify appropriate strategies for meeting an information need. The course give focus to both the concepts and skills needed in undertaking library research with an emphasis on electronic databases. Students may not earn credit for LIBS 150 through challenge exam or portfolio credit.

Upon a successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Gain in sights in differentiate among the major types of information sources; these may include scholarly and popular sources.
  • Identify several information needs in relation to a given research topic.
  • Develop a research strategy in relation to a given research topic.
  • Search and find a variety of information sources to address needs to a given research topic.
  • Gain familiarity in navigating and browsing the library’s databases for periodicals (scholarly & research journals, professional journals, newspapers and popular magazines).
  • Maintains a balanced approach in searching sources that represent a variety oft multiple perspectives.
  • Explain how a source could be used to fulfill a specified information need.
  • Cite sources using major citation style, that include APA and MLA.
  • Gains awareness of ethical issues related to the use of information for academic purposes.
