ENGL 111 English Composition I – 3 hours credit – Introduces students to principles of effective written communication and critical reading. Provides students with the opportunity to develop critical reading, thinking, and writing skills. Students will engage fully in the writing process, develop effective rhetorical arguments, compose academic essays that support a thesis statement, and increase stylistic control of their writing.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
This course is designed to develop your ability to write clearly in academic coursework. You will be expected to:
- Discover topics for academic essays using critical reading skills
- Craft thesis statements that make a point or a claim
- Construct valid arguments based on a variety of evidence (facts, expert opinions, representative samples, statistics, and personal testimony)
- Write about a topic for a specific audience and with a clear purpose
- Organize ideas to foster clarity and coherence
- Conduct academic research on a topic
- Write at least one research-based academic essay, following MLA or APA documentation style
- Write and clear and complete sentences without errors that impede meaning
- Develop reflective learning habits that result in a greater awareness of your writing skills.
