HUMA 232 Art Appreciation – 3 hours credit – Art Appreciation is an introductory course which provides a comprehensive overview of the world of visual arts. It serves to enhance understanding and appreciation for a broad range of imagery, media, artists, movements and periods in history. This course illustrates the place of art in social and cultural life and encourages students to develop judgment in art analysis and criticism. Students familiarized with this basic core of information, thought, and experience have the opportunity to become more confident in their visual literacy.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of this course students will have:
- Been introduced to a basic vocabulary of visual art theory and practice, and provided opportunities using this vocabulary to more articulately discuss art.
- Practiced the skills of careful, active looking and reflection as they relate to visual art, and establish these as the basis for further study.
- Been introduced to a selected history of visual art.
- Explored ways in which visual art might be part of our collective and personal spiritual journey.
- Explored the ways in which visual art embodies many belief systems, and how this makes for complex relationships between faith, art and audience.
