Position Summary

The Chief Librarian leads the University in its mission to meet the needs of a preeminent online university, articulates a strategic vision and mission. The incumbent is the chief administrator for the University’s library, reports directly to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Chief Librarian is responsible for the successful administration of the Libraries in accordance with all properly authorized policies and procedures of the University’s Library.

Essential Duties and Functions

  • Participate in the establishment of Learning Resources Program policies and procedures.
  • Provide guidance for classified staff in all aspects of Learning Resources operations.
  • Supervise and oversee routine activities that include the processing, categorizing, maintenance and organization of resource materials including the collection and presentation of information to support both faculty and students.
  • Prepares and justifies the Library budgets, including request for funding that reflects to the academic program changes.
  • Deliver courses/presentations to students dealing with relevant issues such as academic honesty, research skills, etc.
  • Maintains policy and procedures for library services and academic and student support services.
  • Engaging in the hiring, training, and management of library staff, including technicians and assistants.
  • Codes, classify, and catalog books, publications, films, audiovisual aids, and other library materials based on subject matter or standard library classification systems.
  • Evaluate library inventory needs and place orders.
  • Collect and Analyze requests from students and faculty to determine needed information, and assist in furnishing or locating that information.
  • Engages in purposefully acquires and maintains a thorough knowledge of the research, teaching, and learning needs of faculty and students, identifies the most effective methods of providing library services.

Qualifications and Desired Characteristics

The successful candidate will:

  • Possess combine expertise and experience from both the academic discipline and library/information sciences.
  • An earned graduate level degree is expected, whether that is an advanced degree in a related discipline and extensive library experience or an MLIS with a combination of relevant library and academic experience. (An earned Ph.D. is preferred)
  • Demonstrates knowledge of key trends in library science, including the ability to evaluate emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrates success in recruiting, leading, and managing library staff, including instituting professional development opportunities.
  • Demonstrates strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting, financial management, and resource allocation.
  • Demonstrates success in fostering diversity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of special collections and university archives.
  • Experience with information literacy instruction and assessment.
  • Experience Creates and maintains library learning aids, tutorials, and research guides.
