Starting at the right courses is an indispensable component of success in your math or English courses. If you are not transferring in a college-level English or/and math course, you need to take a math or/and English placement test to start with the right course. At Leighton University, we only use a standardized test, for example, ACT or SAT scores, to establish which math or English placement test you need to take (we have found that these tests describe current aptitude but do not help decide where on the sequence a student should start).
Placement Examinations in Mathematics and English
You can be placed into appropriate math or English course based on appropriate SAT or ACT math/English sub-scores or other national and international criteria or your performance on the Accuplacer. Suppose the placements determined by the sub-score and the exam are different. In that case, you may choose either one after consulting with an Academic Navigator.
Who Should Take the Examination
ACT score: A minimum of 17 in mathematics and 21 in English taken within the last five years.
SAT score: A minimum score of 510 mathematics and and 560 in English, taken within the last five years.
AP English Lit/Comp Exam: A score of 4 or 5 on the AP Exam
IBT (internet-based TOEFL): A minimum score of 77 overall and a 20 in writing. These scores have been taken within the last two years.
IELTS(The International English Language Testing System) score: A minimum of 6.0 overall and a 6.0 in writing. These scores must not be older than two years.
Submission of an official transcript from an accredited college or University in the U.S.: with evidence that the student has earned a U.S. college degree or has passed college-level (credit earning) English or math with a grade of “C” or higher. The submission of official transcripts for placement should be sent to the Transfer Credit and Placement Office at traneval@leighton-edu.us.
